Press release from Air Dynasty Heli Services Pvt Ltd

Among the victims were four Chinese nationals and the Nepali pilot, Captain Arun Malla, who had 13 years of flying experience with 6,330 total flying hours. The crash site was located in a forested area, making immediate rescue efforts challenging. A Prabhu helicopter (9N-ANL) was dispatched to the scene, where rescuers confirmed that one body was burnt beyond recognition, highlighting the severity of the crash. Initial speculation suggests adverse weather conditions as a potential cause, given the area’s thick fog and challenging terrain. However, specific details will be known as further investigations progress.

Government Response and Investigation

In response to the crash, the Nepalese government promptly called an emergency cabinet meeting. The meeting decided to form an investigative team which is being lead by Nepal Army’s senior pilot Subash Thapa to thoroughly examine the incident and recommend safety measures. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) is also expected to lead the investigation, focusing on determining the exact cause and preventing future occurrences.

Context of Aviation Safety in Nepal

Nepal’s aviation sector has faced frequent accidents, attributed to challenging mountainous terrains, adverse weather conditions, and sometimes inadequate safety standards. This incident adds to a series of aviation mishaps in recent years, including a fatal Saurya Airlines crash at Tribhuvan International Airport on July 24, 2024, which claimed 18 lives.

Historically, helicopter accidents in Nepal have often been linked to poor weather and pilot error. For instance, the tragic 2019 crash that killed then Tourism Minister Rabindra Adhikari and six others was partly attributed to pilot passion/go-ahead to fly despite adverse weather. The frequent aviation accidents in Nepal have raised significant concerns about air safety in the country, which is known for its challenging mountainous terrain.

Nepal’s aviation industry has continued to face scrutiny and criticism for its safety standards, leading to bans on Nepali carriers in European Union airspace. Incidents like these are unfortunately not going to help Nepal in getting out of this ban.

Yet another incident in Nepali airspace with the recent one in Air Dynasty helicopter crash highlights the ongoing challenges within Nepal’s aviation industry. The government’s swift response to investigate and address the incident reflects a commitment to enhancing air travel safety. However, it is not the first time this has happened which also calls for focused review not just analyzing the incident but the entire system/structure in place which is resulting in such incidents one after another. It seriously calls for the need for sustained efforts to improve safety standards and infrastructure in Nepal’s aviation sector to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Yet another investigation for the shake of it alone will not be enough. Nepal, seriously need to step in and take actions and take them fast to ensure such incidents does not repeat in Nepali airspace.
